Letter 2 Def Jam by Nas

Wow check this out yall i cant even be mad at him preach

From: Nas
To: LA Reid, Steve Bartels, Steve Gawley, Michael Seltzer, Joseph Borrino, Chris Hicks
Subject: PUT MY SHIT OUT!

Peace to all,

With all do respect to you all, Nas is NOBODY’s slave. This is not the 1800′s, respect me and I will respect you.

I won’t even tap dance around in an email, I will get right into it. People connect to the Artist @ the end of the day, they don’t connect with the executives. Honestly, nobody even cares what label puts out a great record, they care about who recorded it. Yet time and time again its the executives who always stand in the way of a creative artist’s dream and aspirations. You don’t help draw the truth from my deepest and most inner soul, you don’t even do a great job @ selling it. The #1 problem with DEF JAM is pretty simple and obvious, the executives think they are the stars. You aren’t…. not even close. As a matter of fact, you wish you were, but it didn’t work out so you took a desk job. To the consumer, I COME FIRST. Stop trying to deprive them! I have a fan base that dies for my music and a RAP label that doesn’t understand RAP. Pretty fucked up situation

This isn’t the 90′s though. Beefing with record labels is so 15 years ago. @ this point I just need you all to be very clear where I stand and how I feel about “my label.” I could go on twitter or hot 97 tomorrow and get 100,000 protesters @ your building but I choose to walk my own path my own way because since day one I have been my own man. I did business with Tommy Mottola and Donnie Einer, two of the most psycho dudes this business ever created. I worked well with them for one major reason……. they believed in me. The didn’t give a fuck about what any radio station or magazine said….those dudes had me.

Lost Tapes is a movement and a very important set up piece for my career as it stands. I started this over 5 years ago @ Columbia and nobody knew what it was or what it did but the label put it out as an LP and the fans went crazy for it and I single handlely built a new brand of rap albums. It’s smart and after 5 years it’s still a head of the game. This feels great and you not feeling what I’m feeling is disturbing. Don’t get in the way of my creativity. We are aligned with the stars here, this is a movement. There is a thing called KARMA that comes to haunt you when you tamper with the aligning stars. WE ARE GIVING THE PEOPLE EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT. Stop throwing dog shit on a MAGICAL moment.

You don’t get another Nas recording that doesn’t count against my deal….PERIOD! Keep your bullshit $200,000.00 fund. Open the REAL budget. This is a New York pioneers ALBUM, there ain’t many of us. I am ready to drop in the 4th quarter. You don’t even have shit coming out! Stop being your own worst enemy. Let’s get money!

The Birth of M.O.E.T Entertainment

Back in early 2000 Oh Boyee (Founder) & Shawn Evans (Co Founder)  came up with the creation of M.O.E.T Entertainment . This was Created  for various reasons the modo was always Money Over Everything an i came up with the idea for the logo that we branded to use for Promotions of all sorts from Clothing, Parties to music etc. its not only music its a lifestye as well alot people repping the team hard. We have a few Artists on the Roster we were working with to get things in motion such as J.R up & Coming rapper & Producer , NorSo rapper. With Shawn gone RIP we must grind harder than ever to put the team an movement in full effect… So moment of silence for my best friend & business partner. Shoutout to @ma610 for hooking me up with the new M.O.E.T logo if yall need any graffic work he is the guy for the job. …..

The Rise An Fall Of Rap

When i say RAP what comes to mind when you think of this particular genre of music? The birth of Hip Hop was in the Bronx NY. They had alot of artists coming on the map from this state such as Krs1,LL Cool J,Eric B an Rakim,Big Daddy Kane Etc. Across the Coast on the other side of the country was Eric “Eazy E” Wright the founder of N.W.A the premier gangsta rap group they spoke on alot of controversial events that had some people in America furious. The best thing about music is having the ability to voice your opinion an alot of people did it. Early on songs such as fight the power, niggas with attitudes, etc. In the early 90s was when rap was at its best there was alot of talent in the game if you couldn’t spit with the best you couldn’t spit at all REAL TALK. The RISE in Hip hop was 2pac an Biggie these guys had attracted fans of all crowds an made alot of good music plus were very marketable opening the doors to acting for many rappers down the line clothing lines etc. Now With the good comes the Bad the FALL the media has the power to destroy anyone an it did in this case both young performers used music to air out personal business with each other starting the east vs west beef as the media portrayed 2pac made hit em up which was the best diss song ever made in MY OPINION. What many people dont know is that biggie never dissed him back, “Who shot ya” is not a Pac diss biggie has gone on record saying this we lost both these artists due to beef but today many artists glorify beef to sell records have we not learned anything Hip Hop? With Big an Pac gone this opened the door to alot new acts mainly DMX, Jayz who was overshadowed by success of Pac Big an Nas at the time. We should respect Jayz cuz when Rap was at its lowest point he put the game on his back with “in my lifetime vol.2” a classic album at that time Roc-a-Fella records and Ruff Ryders had game on smash. In the end both these camps eventually split ways like most rappers from NY, from the beginning NY rappers never stuck together from krs1 vs mc shan to nas vs jayz to big vs pac if we wanna be technical since they both from NY. The birth place of hip hop has never been able to stick together causing the south to move in on there territory taking over the game. The south has had a very long run dating back to the Lil Jon days all because they work with each other promote all artists an keep the music coming. its time someone steps to the Mic a reclaims the throne for Eastcoast because music has turned into a colorful dance scene with product that we are now handed. Will REAL RAP ever come back only time will tell…..

An Artist’s Grind to Success

Dedication, determination an disipline are the deciding factors to determine who is gonna shine  artists must maintain this to keep them in grind mode. Just like everything else in life it’s all about work ethic who is coming out with the most music consistantly an keeping the fans satisfied. The reason you need to do that is because the fans dictate how long ya career is gonna last by the work you give them. The fans are the ones who go out an support you come to your shows etc.  In recent years alot of artists have been using the mixtape platform to keep their buzz up  by doing mixtapes monthly to keep the airwaves open with their music such as Wiz Khalifa,  A-Mafia, Lil Wayne to name a few.

The best tool to promote your music now is the internet it has everything you could need an most people have access to it. There are alot of sites that puts music an mixtapes up available which artists have been taken advantage of to push their music  most do free downloads so everyone can get it while others charge.  If you notice its like the artists must give the fans a free teaser before  they drop an album to help with sales now more than ever. A good example is Rick Ross with the Albert Anastasia mixtape which first gave us a listen to the song BMF which was a major hit for him going into “Teflon Don”  album even Eminem who always tops the charts came out with a mixtape before “The Recovery” dropped.

In the past all you needed to do was get one single on the radio an that would dictate most of your album sales, but since music has drastically declined over the years now people wanna hear more  before they buy an album an artists must deliver an sell them selves more than ever seems like you gotta give to receive sales especially with the ability to download music which is already taking away from them. Artists these days must have good work ethic an know the business side  of things as well because these labels are shelving artists  more than ever now.. Alot people fell victim to that an have singles out but  no album follows up behind it an labels own the rights to the music.

The alternate to the majors is taking the independent route which is probably the best way to go in my opinion. The reason i feel that way is because there is no promotion like self promotion  you get out of it what you put in an have creative control for the most part which the major labels usually dictate..  Alot artists get mad at the South an new rappers that just pop up out of no were but at the end of the day the worst artist is gonna shine if he is putting the work an delivering music constantly. In some cases its not all about talent its about ya GRIND an how bad you really want it. In close i think if all artists gives the bigger picture 100% an knows how to A) make good music B)business perspective C) how to market themselves to all fanbases an be original with the music they make they will be successful GRIND  some artists got it an others don’t hard work pays off when the money comes in an thats a fact..
